GRAHAM WIFFEN

Graham Wiffen unfortunately passed away on Monday March 8 after a long battle with illness aged 57.

Wiff was a true clubman and as Rupert correctly pointed out at last season’s end of season dinner a ‘Bessborough Legend’.

He was batsman who was a regular at the top of the order in the club’s second and third team’s for many years. While he didn’t own a wide range of strokes, he used his technique and talent to great effect and made the most of his ability scoring 2 hundreds for the club and countless 50’s. He will also be remembered as a safe pair of hands in the gully.

Towards the end of his career he began to bowl his off breaks with great effect on Sunday and I know how proud he was of a 6 wicket haul to add to his 4 prized 5 for’s.

Off the field Wiff was one of our leaders, who as secretary of the club for 20 years helped us sail through the stormy waters of the mid 1990’s after the clubhouse fire and lay solid foundations for the future. His work towards gaining ‘club mark’ was invaluable and his legacy off the field will be seen at Headstone Manor for years to come.

In all this he was backed up with the love and support of his wife Denise.

He was a truly great guy who will be missed both on and off the cricket field.
