The Success of the Bessborough 6-a-side

BOROUGH 6-A-SIDE
By Jay Chavda

On Sunday 28th August, Bessborough CC hosted their third 6-a-side club day. After previous year successes we had a lot of interest so there was a lot of orgainisation to occur.

On the day there were 4 teams made up of Bessborough members who had been selected the previous day in a champions league style draw. The fifth team was made up by Duncan West who brought back members of the past to be part of a single team again, and from the results still have not lost the skills of the game.

The day started a bit slow due to the pitch being prepared due to the weather but as the day went on, the day slowly became better and better.

At the half way stage, each team had played two games and had won one and lost one which was setting up to be an interesting way to resolve the outright winning team.

The afternoon showed some true class with Ian Barrie, Andy Carr, Akshay Hirani,Hemmen Jutla, Sherrick Chavda, William Grogan and more showing true class with the bat retiring reaching 25.  With the ball there were performances by Rishi Patel, Phil Bush and Duncan West with some tight bowling by other individuals.

As the day went on the penultimate game saw the Purple team versus Westlife having a match to find who would win their place in the final.  A solid batting performance by Westlife saw them outright winners and taking the top position.  The final game between the Yellows and Pinks was tense as if the yellows won they would be in the final but if the pinks won there would be a three way tie.  The Yellows got off to a strong start with Sherrick Chavda putting Jay Chavda in the trees following a strange noise from the Umpire Andy Carr.  With a target of 40ish bowling had to be tight but Ian Barrie and Steven Kimsey Jr had other ideas getting the runs off less than 3 overs.

This lead to a three way bowl off between the Purples, lead by R. Karkhanis, the Yellows, lead by S. Chavda and the Pinks, lead by A. Irani.  Each player would come up to bowl at the stumps and the winner would be in the final.  It was close with near misses and very few hits until D. Chavda and W. Grogan hit for the purples putting them 2-1 up against the Yellows. Up steps Ian Ridley who had to hit to take it to the final person on each team but there was no bottle and Purples made it to the final.

Now the final couldnt be played in the same format so a bowl out was agreed between the teams. It was a close affair with both teams doing what was required A. Mace taking the first ball and hitting and then A. Hirani coming up and cartwheeling the stumps, with other hits it came down to H. Jutla to take the ball and win it for the Purples and he did. Purples won through a bowl-out.

Performances of the day
I. Barrie      -     81 runs
A. Carr       -     71 runs
T. Percival   -     69 runs
H. Jutla and S. Chavda - 62 runs

D. West     -     5 Wickets
R. Karkhanis -   4 Wickets
Rishi Patel, Ravi Vyas and Phil Bush - 3 Wickets

A successful day finished with good food and a game of killer at the club. A special thanks goes out to A. Irani, P. Bush and S. Chavda for all their work in organising the whole event.
