AWARDS NIGHT WINNERS 2011
By James Wheeler
First team all-rounder Ian Barrie picked up 3 awards at our 2011 Awards Night which was held at the Rising Sun Restaurant in Sudbury at the end of the March. IB picked up the First Eleven Player of the Season, The Twenty20 Player of the Season and Batsman of the Year awards.
Ian Ridley won the Second Eleven award in his debut season after moving to Bessborough from neighbours Harrow St Mary’s. Ridley’s runs at the top of the order won him the award saw him as the standout winner for captain Phil Bush.
The Third Eleven award was won for a second consecutive season by Daminda Kolugala who starred with both bat and ball and led the third team to 3rd in their division. Saager Vora picked up the Fourth Eleven award after a good season with the bat.
The Sunday First team award was won by Kunal Mehta and the Most Improved award went to seamer Jay Chavda who managed to step out of his brother’s shadow last season and put in some consistent and exceptional performances with all forms of the game. Jay also picked up the season’s Duck Cup proving that his strength is most definitely with the ball and not bat in hand.
Teenage off-spin bowler Mitesh Vyas picked up the exclusive Bowler of the Year award for his outstanding performances for Phil Bush’s Second team. Also starring in the Second Team was Alex Irani who won the Fielder of the Year award after he took some blinding catches in the slips including 4 in one game. He also was happy to take the keepers gloves whenever the opportunity arose and proved a dab hand behind the stumps.
The Captains’ Award was won by Vinay Bhudia after his excellent performances for all 4 Saturday sides. Vin was always on the top form and happy to help out all the captains and was a great team player both on and off the field.
The final award of the night was ‘The Robbie Cup’ which goes to the person who has done the most for the club off the field and there was only one man who was worthy of this award . . . . Richard Ward. Wardy as club secretary was an inspiration off the field leading the club off the field and he has pursued sponsorship and fund raising opportunities.
The event was an excellent night with an Indian Buffet for food and live music. Also Wheels, Ronnie. Ed and Geezer joined the band on stage and sang a couple of songs including ‘Summer of 69’ and ‘My Way’. Bails also got hold of a guitar and played a couple of Oasis numbers.
The committee would like to thank Alex Irani and his colleagues for organising an excellent night.
