Bessborough grind out losing draw
Bessborough picked up a point at Headstone Manor from an attritional losing draw versus Middlesex Tamil Sports & Social Club (MTSSC) .
With murky overhead conditions Bessborough skipper Danny Hawes elected to bowl after winning the toss. Missing regular strike bowler Ian Barrie, Hawes gave the new ball to pace man Nirav Ghantiwala and spinner Nitin Modha.
It was Ghantiwala who claimed the first scalp when Jay Chavda caught Niroshan Sritharan (7) in the fifth over. Five overs later MTSSC were 25 for 2 as Ghantiwala bowled David Devadoss for 10.
The opposition steadily rebuilt their innings with partnerships of 52 and 47 for the third and fourth wickets respectively, but despite the lack of wickets the Bessborough attack, in particular Modha (0-87) who bowled non-stop for 25 overs, were doing a good job of denying runs.
However, that changed after the fall of the fourth wicket in the 41st over with MTSSC on 134 when S. Yoganathan (83 not out) went on the attack. He and number five Raghukulan Loganathan (30) doubled the run-rate with some big shots to help MTSSC close out their 55 overs on 245-5.
A slow and solid opening stand of 58 between Hawes (38) and Tharshan Kanagaraj (25) set the tone for the Bessborough innings. New overseas player Alexander Haniff showed glimpses of his potential with a tidy 39 as the home side finished on 128-5 from 47 overs.
The less said about the second and third elevens’ performances the better with the only real debate being which side suffered the heaviest defeat. The 2s lost by 9 wickets away to Enfield , while the 3s were crushed by 161 runs at Twickenham , including the mother of all collapses as the last six wickets fell for only 10 runs.
It was left to the fourth team to pick up Bessborough’s only win of the weekend with a convincing 108-run victory over Crouch End.
Bessborough set a challenging total of 191, including powerful knocks from William Gill (42) and Gurpreet Singh (45), but it was in the field that the game was won with superb performances by father-and-son Bharat and Ravi Vyas.
Youngster Ravi opened the bowling and immediately got the ball arching on a lovely full length. In two devastating spells of seam bowling Ravi picked up 6-16 with four of his victims clean bowled. His dad, Bharat, came on as first change bowler, and Crouch End were equally troubled by his spin bowling as he claimed 4-18.
On Sunday, Bessborough’s involvement in the Middlesex Country KO Cup ended at the first hurdle as Acton inflicted a 9-wicket drubbing. Bessborough were all out for 85 from 24 overs. Only numbers eight Talha Junaid (24) and ten Kibreeth Rameez (17) made it to double-figures.
