back to winning ways
Bessborough ended a run of
consecutive defeats with a brilliant 4 wicket win at Barnes last Saturday in
the Middlesex County Cricket League.
Captain Rohan Karkhanis won the
toss and put Barnes into bat. Neal Patel returning from university took the new
ball alongside Sharuban “KP” Kanthasamy and it was the later who struck first
picking up the wicket of Chambers caught by club stalwart Andy Carr.
Barnes started to rebuild
through Alder and Ryan and it took a fantastic catch from vice-captain Sherrick
Chavda at midwicket to dismiss Alder with the score on 43. Barnes rebuilt with
their strong middle order with Habib and Thomas both striking half centuries
but Bessborough always felt in control with the introduction of spin bowlers
Rohan Karkhanis and Mitesh Vyas who were backed up by an excellent allround performance
by Bessborough in the field. Captain Karkanis led from the front picking up a
season best 5-68 from 16 overs as Barnes were eventually skittled for 219 in 51
overs. The final two catches taken by Ian Barrie and Vyas were high class and a
great example of the fielding unit backing up the bowlers.
In the reply openers Kushal Patel
and Ishan Shah got off to a great start putting on 76 for the first wicket
before Shah was dismissed in the 11th over. It was vital start for Bessborough
after a couple of shaky performances with Kushal Patel especially looking in
great touch. He went past 350 runs for the season in his innings of 64 which
included a massive six which was flicked off his pads over the pavilion.
When Patel was dismissed, the
Bessborough innings wobbled slightly and it was left to wicket-keeper Jigar Shah
who took over the lead role and anchored our innings with a brilliant 88. With
Bessborough reduced to 158-6, Shah found an able partner in Neal Patel and the
pair saw us reach the target with 15 overs to spare.
The win saw Bessborough move up
to 5th in the League with 2 wins and 2 defeats from their opening 4 League games.
They will hope to make it consecutive wins for the first time this season if
they beat Highgate this weekend.
The other sides unfortunately
didn’t fare as well last Saturday. The second and fourth elevens both suffered
defeats while the third eleven were left without a game after their opponents
cancelled on Thursday evening.
