U15s WIN BY ONE RUN IN CUP
By Simon Heaney
Bessborough Under-15s beat Lohana by one-run in a thrilling first round ECB U15 Championship - North Area cup game on Tuesday evening.
In arctic conditions the players did really well to maintain concentration, while a damp wicket and a slow outfield weren't conducive to great cricket either. Batting first, the Borough openers Thanuka Jayawardena (9) and new signing Tommy Wheeler (30) put on 48 for the first wicket to help the side set a total of 68-5 from the 15 overs.
Thanuka then spun his magic at the start of Lohana's reply, taking the top four wickets in the first three overs for only four runs. The home side managed to rebuild their innings and going into the last over required six runs for victory. U13s player Snehan Das was entrusted with the final over and showed maturity beyond his years by only conceding four runs to clinch the win.
Assistant team manager Aruna Jayawardena praised U13 players Das and Roshan Adatia for their performances in the higher age group, and also singled out the more senior players Jamie Young for his good all round performance with both bat and ball and Wheeler for his excellent wicket keeping in very difficult conditions.
The team will now play Stanmore away next week in the second round on a date to be confirmed.
