Brilliant Week for Bessborough

The week commencing July 4th saw Bessborough claim their best run of results of the season with wins for our First, Second, Fourth and Sunday teams while our Third Eleven were one wicket from victory and had to settle for a winning draw. Our Barbarians side also won twice to make it seven wins out of seven for our midweek team.

The First Eleven moved off the bottom of Division 3 of the MCCL with a thrilling two wicket win over neighbours Harrow Town. Batting first Harrow Town looked well set at 122-2 after 22 overs, but a devastating spell from left arm spinner Kibreeth Rameez (pictured) saw our hosts collapse to 187 all out inside 46 overs. Rameez who has had a terrific first full season in our first eleven picked up a career best 7-69 from 20 overs with the other three wickets falling to Gihan Pallage, Faisal Tanoli and captain Sherrick Chavda.

Chavda then opened the first eleven’s reply with returning hero Rupert Thacker, the pair put on 48 in 11 overs before Chavda was dismissed for 18. Thacker batted with typical aplomb before being dismissed for 33 with the score on 61. A flurry of wickets saw Chavda’s men slide to 119-5. Allrounder Gihan Pallage coming in at number 7 steadied the ship with 44 not out and despite the loss of three wickets saw the first eleven to their target with two wickets to spare. This result saw the first eleven move off the bottom with Harrow Town dropping to the bottom.

The Second Eleven won consecutive games for the first time since the end of last season with a comfortable six wicket win over Ickenham at Headstone Manor. Phil Bush won the toss, and on an excellent wicket, took the brave decision to put their bottom of the table opposition into bat. Early strikes by opening bowlers Nirav Ghantiwala and Akshay Hirani put the visitors on the back foot. Ickenham’s third wicket pair of Bensted and Fope launched a steady not spectacular counter attack. With Ickenham looking to raise the tempo, spinners Nitin Modha and Mitesh Vyas shared six wickets with Modha the pick of the bowlers with 4-38 off 14 overs as Ickenham were dismissed on 184.

Bush and wicket-keeper Adil Parker set about a below par Ickenham bowling attack in the early overs with the second eleven captain in particular brutal form. After Parker was dismissed with the score on 69, Talha Junaid joined his captain and continued the assault. Bush made his second half century of the season before being dismissed for 65. Junaid followed his captain shortly afterwards back to the pavilion but the pair of Tharshan Kanagaraj and Hemmen Jutla saw the second eleven to the brink of victory with a partnership of 49. Kanagaraj fell with our second eleven four runs short of the target and it was left to Sanil Shah to smash his second ball for four to clinch a comfortable but well-earned victory.

Ian Ridley’s Third Eleven had to settle for a winning draw after being denied victory by Twickenham’s final wicket pair at Headstone Manor. Batting first, the third eleven collapsed from 100-2 to 156 all out. The pick of the batsman were Vidoosha Jayawardena who scored his first half century of the season and captain Ridley who struck a well-made 48.  Twickenham’s reply was slow and sluggish but with a target of only 157 in 49 overs, Ridley had to manage his bowlers and the third eleven had to field well. Off Spinner Eranda Jayasinghe bowled a misally 20 over spell which went for only 50 runs and picked up six wickets. With the game set for a close finish, a flurry of wickets saw Twickenham block out and they finished their innings on 140-9 giving the third eleven a third winning draw in the last four games.

The Fourth Eleven won their first game of the season to move off the bottom and out of the relegation zone after a six wicket win at Wembley. Captain Richard Ward won the toss and put the hosts into bat and his bowling attack dismissed Wembley for only 140 inside 42 overs with left arm swing bowler Jamie Young the pick of the bowlers with 3-19. Ward’s men were never really in trouble and won by six wickets after chasing the target in 30 overs. Opener Beavon Fernando scored a good 32 while Ward and vice-captain John Trowbridge saw the fourth eleven home with scores of 40 and 19 not out respectively. Ward who rode his luck at times, hit successive boundaries to clinch a first win since last August.

On Sunday our Chess Valley League side made it two wins out of three with a comfortable five wicket win over St John’s Wood at Headstone Manor. Our visitors batted first and were dismissed for only 124 in 41.2 overs. Wickets were shared around with spinner Nandesh Patel picking up 3-29 in an eight over spell. Despite losing five wickets, we secured a comfortable win with youngster Stefaan Fernando seeing the side home with an unbeaten 40.

The Barbarians made it seven wins out of seven with midweek wins over Watford Town and West London Lions. On Tuesday, The Barbarians won by seven wickets at Watford Town with Tharshan Kanagaraj scoring his fourth consecutive half century for The Barbarians while Rupert Thacker scored an unbeaten 48. On Wednesday night The Barbarians beat the West London Lions by 46 runs with Harris Malik scoring 57 and captain James Wheeler hitting 45.
