Not the best of weeks

Bessborough First Eleven managed to get a losing draw against visitors North London on a sweltering day at Headstone Manor last Saturday. North London batted first and racked up 267-6 in their 50 overs with opening batsman Milo Jennings anchoring the innings with 91. All six North London wickets fell to the left arm spin of returning captain Rohan Karkanis and Kibreeth Rameez who both took three wickets. Karkhanis’ men responded by scoring 163-6 off their 50 overs with young opening batsman Vidoosha Jayawardena top scoring with 48 on his debut for the First Eleven. This weekend our First Eleven travel to 4th placed Osterley looking a fourth league win of the season.

The Second Eleven put a terrific performance against all the odds at top of the table of Southgate before eventually losing by five wickets at their hosts beautiful Walker Ground in North London. Our hosts won the toss and elected to field and started with four successive maidens. Opening batsman and wicket-keeper Adil Parker was then forced to retire hurt after suffering a serious ankle sprain while running between the wickets. The injury ruled Parker out of the rest of the game and is set to sideline him for a number of weeks.Phil Bush’s men then lost four quick wickets before the teenage pair of Sujan Sivakumar (48) and Thanuka Jayawardena (22) fought back with a partnership of 50 that led the second eleven to 160 all out in 55 overs.

With quick wickets needed and with only 10 men in the field, a big effort was needed in the field. Tharshan Kanagaraj then produced a couple of moments of brilliance, diving through the air to catch one of Southgate’s opening batsman, before running out Joseph as out hosts stumbled to 13-2 off the opening 10 overs. Veteran Nitin Modha continued to bowl a misally spell of bowling as Southgate just looked to survive on a wearing and turning pitch. The third wicket partnership between O’Leary and Wilson looked to make our hosts favourite, but a brilliant catch from Mitesh Vyas off the bowling of Modha opened an end of our second eleven. Two more wickets fell in quick succession, but our host eventually managed to get over the line five wickets down and in just under 46 overs. It really was a brilliant effort by our 10 men to push our hosts so hard and this performance will hopefully leave us in good shape for the rest of the season.

The Third and Fourth Elevens both suffered heavy defeats at the hands of North London and Brentham respectively. Ian Ridley’s Third Eleven was beaten by 63 runs at North London with our hosts posting 220-9 in their 46 overs. Captain Ridley picked up his first five wicket haul of the season while Stephen Kimsey picked up four wickets. Our reply saw us bowled out for 157 with the highlight being a half century for Jamie Young while Ridley made 40.

The Fourth Eleven were beaten by 103 runs by Brentham at Headstone Manor. Our visitors batted first and posted 254-4 in 45 overs with Saed scoring 106. Swing bowler Aadil Raja picked up all four wickets and finished with figures of 4-66 from his 12 overs. Our reply saw us bowled out for 151 in 33 overs with only Nick Kathoria (48) and Dipak Chavda (36) putting in positive contributions with the bat.

The Sunday side lost their third League game of the campaign at London Maccabi Vale going down by four wickets. Batting first, Ian Ridley’s men slumped to 12-4 and thanks largely to 46 from Sujan Sivakumar posted a respectable 105 before being bowled out. Our hosts eventually chased our total down in 40 overs as they struggled to attack our bowling line-up in helpful conditions.

After seven wins out of seven, The Barbarians lost their first game of the season, going down in a final over thriller against North Harrow on Thursday night. Batting first, The Barbarians posted 148-7 off our 20 overs with vice-captain Richard Clarke top scoring with 54 while Paul Jarvis (28) and captain James Wheeler (20) made vital contributions. North Harrow got off to a positive start with the Ryatt brothers playing shots all-round the ground before spinner Dan Malik had one of the brothers stumped by captain Wheeler. Tight spells by spinners Clarke and Nandesh Patel gave the Barbarians a chance but Omar Ryatt remained at the crease. Eight runs were needed off the final over and despite Ian Ridley picking up the wicket of Sujesh, our visitors got home with one ball to spare.
