Bessborough back to winning ways

First team captain Daniel Hawes set the standard for his troops with an unbeaten 87 as Bessborough got back to winning ways against Turnham Green & Polytechnic on Saturday (June 30).

Following two mediocre performances in the last couple of weeks, Bessborough desperately needed the 10 points from this 8-wicket victory to get their promotion chase back on track.

Hawes won the toss and put Turnham Green in to bat, which paid immediate dividends as Neal Patel had opener Matthews caught behind by Wayne Whitson without a run on the scoreboard.

Turnham Green’s second-wicket stand of 45 between De Coteau (37) and Mason (6) settled the visitors nerves, before Lush (24) and Lovell (51) got them to a respectable 132-5. There followed a dramatic collapse as Borough took the last six wickets for 41 runs.

Akshay Hirani (4-61) and Neal Patel (3-35) claimed the bulk of the wickets, but Rohan Karkhanis deserves special mention for a long and economical spell, finishing with 1-47 after 21 overs.

Hawes (87 not out) and Ramesh Gunalan (34) gave Bessborough a perfect start with a 64-run opening partnership. After Gunulan was bowled by Lush, William Grogan (20) joined his captain at the wicket and the pair added a further 68. Sanil Shah (17 not out) and Hawes added the required runs with little fuss.

Tharshan Kanagaraj was the hero for the 2s with a fluent 79 away to Harrow Town. He was replacing the unavailable skipper Phil Bush, who will be pleased with the 4 points picked up in the winning draw.

Having been put in to bat, stand-in captain Adil Parker (38) and Ian Ridley (13) got Bessborough off to a good start with an opening partnership of 61 before Ridley was caught off Raj Bhadresa (4-65), Harrow’s stand-out bowler on the day.

After Parker was stumped off Bhadresa, Kanagaraj and Richard Edmands (12) put on 42, before Tharshan and Alex Irani (44) added a further 73.

Despite nearly hitting the self-destruct button with four run-outs, Borough ended up with a competitive 249 all out from their 50 overs.

In reply, early wickets from Jay Chavda (3-36) and Stephen Kimsey Jr. (3-30) put Harrow on the defensive and meant the home side were always looking to avoid defeat rather than going for the victory.

Bessborough managed to oust seven Harrow batsmen, but found the obdurate Mohsin Shafi (40 not out) and Yunus Shafi (51) tougher nuts to crack. Harrow’s final total after 50 overs was 169-7.

For the second week running, the 3rd XI were smashed by 111 runs, this time at home against Teddington 4s.

The visitors won the toss and batted first. Teddington’s openers Baverstock and Meredith gave them a steady start with a 44-run partnership, which was eventually broken when Nathan Theebaraj bowled Baverstock for 30.

New bat Eastland carried on the easy run getting as he and Meredith added another 67 before Mark Emanuel removed Eastland for 32, caught by Sothy Sothynathan. The 3s skipper followed that up with a smart bit of fielding to run out Meredith for 36.

Despite Quamina (18) and Mufti (15) both getting starts, the runs dried up for Teddington and some penetrating Bessborough bowling saw the last seven wickets tumble for only 41 runs.

Teddington finished on 176 all out after 45.4 overs. Of the Bessborough bowlers, Sothynathan lead by example with 3-40, while Theebaraj (2-29) and Dillon Maloney (2-30) grabbed a couple of wickets each.

Bessborough’s innings never gained any momentum after losing Tanushan Mahendran (2) in the fourth over and wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter. Only Gajan Gandhi (19), Emanuel (16) and Sothynathan (11) made it into double figures as Bessborough collapsed to 61 all out.

The 4th team put up a brave fight against a good Osterley side, but ended up losing by 6 wickets. Osterley won the toss and opted to bowl, a decision that proved very successful as the top three Borough batsman were removed for the loss of just 14 runs.

Emergency signing Robin Jones rolled back the years with a fine knock of 28, which on a better pitch would easily have been worth more. Jones’ partnerships of 15 and 27 with Richard Wilson (12) and Richard Ward (16) respectively, helped Bessborough to a just about respectable 94 all out.

Once again, Bessborough 4s proved they are a bowling side as young seamers Saagar Vora (1-13) and Tom Newland (1-22) bagged a couple of early breakthroughs, including one very sharp catch by Sammy Hawes at square-leg. Newcomer Praekash Balendra came in as first change bowler and did well in his three overs with 1-20, while Wilson’s spin bowling returned 1-31.

Despite the loss of four partners, Osterley’s wicket-keeper/opener Ali stayed calm and carried his team over the winning line with an unbeaten 40.

At the eighth time of asking, Bessborough finally managed to play some Sunday cricket as the weather just about held good for the Chess Valley League Division 1 match against Chesham.

Bessborough probably wish the game hadn’t gone ahead as they were soundly beaten by 10 wickets. Mark Emanuel, with a good knock of 27, along with Dan Hawes and Rohan Kharkanis (both 15) were the only players to get scores of any note as Borough slumped to 68 all out after 32.5 overs.

Chesham openers Matt Rance (33 not out) and Andy Goddard (34 no) needed just 11.3 overs to end this one-sided match.
