Awards Night Round Up
09 Dec 2014
AWARDS NIGHT ROUND UP
By James Wheeler
On a night of great celebration when the club as a whole was the real winner, the returning Ramesh Gunalan won both the prestigious First Eleven Player and Batsman of the Year awards on a magical night at the club at the end of last month.
The other big winners on the night were Former Vice-Chairman Adil Parker and Club Captain Rohan Karkhanis (both pictured) shared the ‘Robbie Cup’ for their outstanding efforts off the field this season. Both guys have put in so much time improve the future prospects of the club and both were worthy winners.
Not for years have the club had the opportunity to celebrate so much success in a single season. The First Eleven were crowned as Champions of the Middlesex Championship and thus were promoted back to the Middlesex Cricket League. The Second and Fourth Elevens fell just short of their own bids for promotion and even the midweek Barbarians side had an outstanding year.
Rambo was a worthy winner of both awards. He finished the leading runscorer in all competitions scoring a massive 637 runs which included six ‘50s’ at an average of 33.53. In the League, only Jigar Shah scored more than his 475 runs for the first eleven. He also picked up a more than useful 20 wickets with his handy off breaks picking up 5-30 at Old Actonians on the final day of the season.
Another tweaker, the experienced Nitin Modha picked up ‘Bowler of the Year’ for his 30 wickets at an average of 15.97. Only Club Captain Rohan Karkhanis and Mitesh Vyas picked up more wickets but they played 16 and 12 more games respectively. Whether bowling for the first or second eleven, Nitin performances were always consistent more often than not match winning.
In proof that there is no substitute for experience, Andy ‘Geezer’ Carr was named as Fielder of the Year for his outstanding performances in the First Eleven. 10 catches and countless runs saved proved he was a worthy winner.
Second Eleven Skipper Phil Bush had a number of options for the Second Eleven Player of the Year and it was the overall contributions of Kibreeth Rameez than won him the award in his first full season at this level. Whether covering impossible ground in the outfield, scoring vital runs in the middle order or bowling his tidy left arm spin, ‘Kibby’ always contributed. He averaged just under 20 with bat and picked up a vital 15 wickets for the Seconds.
In a disappointing season which saw the Third Eleven relegated, young allrounder Dillon Maloney was a rare bright spark. His 260 League runs with two ‘50s’ saw him win the award given by captain Nathan Theebaraj. Fourth Eleven Player of the Year was awarded to hard hitting allrounder William Gill who managed to make contributions most weeks for Sahil Hathi’s side.
Young batsman Sammy Hawes was voted ‘Barbarians’ Player of the Year after a couple of excellent contributions, pipping his more experience colleagues in the shape of Phil Bush, Ramesh Gunalan and captain James Wheeler to the award.
Other award winners included Sherrick Chavda who picked up the Captains’ Award from Club Captain Rohan Karkhanis, Richard Ward was named as having the ‘Sunday Moment of the Year’ and Fourth Team Allrounder Eddie Idrees picked up the Newcomer of the Year trophy. Young seamer Sharuban ‘KP’ Kanthasamy picked up the Most Improved Player medal. His 27 wickets and lusty lower order batting proved vital for whatever side he was selected in.
Fourth Team batting rocks Simon Heaney and Praekash Balendra shared the Duck Cup with an outstanding seven ducks a piece.
Along the Awards, guests were treated to an outstanding curry which was supplied by Nathan Theebaraj’s ‘Rising Sun’ Hotel and Restaurant.
Bessboroughcc.com would like to congratulate all the award winners and thank everybody that made the night so enjoyable for all.
Here is to a fantastic 2014 . . . . Roll on 2015!
