Bessborough Cricket Club Barbarians v West Harrow on Thu 26 Jul 2012 at 6pm
Bessborough Cricket Club Lost by 85 runs

Match report It was a case of third time lucky for West Harrow as after consecutive defeats by our Barbarians they finally managed a win, beating our Barbarians by 85 runs on a stunning July day at our Headstone Manor ground.

‘The Headstone Manor Derby’ has been a big success in recent seasons and once again the biggest crowd of our season turned out to see the first Barbarians game in nearly a month. West Harrow captain Natu won the toss and decided to bat without hesitation on an excellent wicket for batting.

The West Harrow side was considerably stronger than in the two previous meetings this season and the opening pair of Ramia and Kishan took full advantage of the T20 Powerplay in the first 6 overs flaying the Barbarians opening attack of Jay Chavda and Ian Ridley. Chavda and Ridley actually bowled very well but a combination of an excellent batting strip and some intelligent stroke play got West Harrow away to a flyer.

With the field restrictions relaxed, off spinner Richard Clarke and medium pacer Mark Emanuel were brought on to try and stem the tide. Emanuel the leading runscorer for the club was making his Barbarians debut picked up the first wicket when he had Ramia excellently caught at long off by Ridley. Ramia’s opening partner reached his 50 soon, but he made only 3 more runs before he run out by an excellent throw from Andy Carr at midwicket.

West Harrow’s number 3, Ryoneh was easily the best batsman we have faced this summer and he struck a long ball to all parts of the ground. He was particularly harsh on off spinners Richard Clarke and Simon Heaney who both went for 10 runs an over. Ryoneh reached 59 before he was excellently caught by Matt Wheeler who was making his first appearance at the club for two years.

Alex Irani bowled his first over of the season which ended with him going for 20 runs and with the ball flying to all parts. The highlight was Ron’s tantrum after he had finished.

The Barbarians best bowler on the day and this season has been Ian Ridley. Captain James Wheeler has often used him at the death and once again he showed how skilled he is picking up 3 wickets in his final 2 overs to finish with figures of 3-27 from his 4 overs. West Harrow finished with 206-6 off their 20 overs.

Loz Horsley led the Barbarians reply with opening partner Irani and he showed his strength’s with four booming drives which had the West Harrow fielders diving for cover. Even with an excellent start, especially by Horsley, the run rate continued to rise. Both were clean bowled in the same over by Sawan as well as number four Paul Jarvis who struck his first ball for four before suffering the same fate.

The Barbarians started a mini revival with Andy Carr and the returning Matt Wheeler with Carr especially being his usual aggressive self. Tragedy occurred when a mix-up led to Carr being run out, but even more worryingly was a foot injury that ruled him out of the weekend.

Captain James Wheeler, playing his first game in over 6 weeks due to his wedding, honeymoon and the weather was stumped first ball after over stretching to off spin bowler Umar. His brother Matt was out in the next over LBW to Ankit, he can count himself a little unlucky as he appeared to hit it.

Leading run scorer at the club Mark Emanuel was also dismissed for a duck, caught at mid off to Umar and that was effectively the game. One of the Barbarians stars of the season, Richard Clarke regained some pride for us with a spirited 37 not out which included shots all around the ground and another big six into the bike park. The Barbarians were eventually bowled out for 121 in the 16th over with us still 85 runs short.

There were was only one real candidate for Man of the Match and for the second game running, Ian Ridley picked up a bottle of claret for his performance with the ball.
