Bessborough Cricket Club Barbarians v Bushey on Thu 27 Jun 2013 at 6pm
Bessborough Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report A brilliant innings from Paul Jarvis couldn’t prevent The Barbarians suffering a third consecutive defeat with Bushey winning at Headstone Manor by an impressive nine wickets. On a horrible June evening, Captain James Wheeler won his first toss of the season and in horrible wet conditions decided to bat first.

The ‘Richard’s (Edmands & Clarke) opened the batting for The Barbarians and it didn’t take Clarke long to get the innings off to a flyer with a massive 12 runs coming from Khan’s opening over for Bushey. With the rain still falling Clarke despatched the bowling to all parts and he was particularly savage on Morton who he struck five of his seven boundaries. With talk from the boundary on a potential hundred, Clarkey was clean bowled by Morton for 31 in only the fourth over.

Elegant left hander Paul Jarvis walked out at number 3 and he and Edmands continued to keep some pressure on the Bushey bowling by nudging and nurdling ones and twos and putting the bad ball away. Edmands and wicket-keeper Alex Irani were both dismissed in quick succession to leave The Barbarians 64-3 off 10 overs.

With conditions not improving captain Wheeler joined Jarvis at the crease and he struggled on a skiddy wet pitch that was becoming increasing difficult to bat on. The captain managed to connect with one slog sweep which he sent into the trees, but he was LBW to Usman from the next delivery for only 9.

Jarvis was looking more assured as he faced more deliveries and his strike rate continued to rise. He has already played more games this season than he did in 2012 and the club has missed him on the field. The way he effortlessly pushed balls into gaps, added to a couple trademark square cuts, he kept our innings going while his colleagues struggled.

Sammy Hawes and Second Eleven captain Phil Bush both came and went fairly quickly before Kiwi Twenty20 specialist Simon Peck joined Jarvis. The pair put on 25 runs in only three overs as The Barbarians looked to reach 150. Jarvo brought up his first Barbarians 50 with only three overs remaining and he added another 16 runs including a massive six over extra cover in the final over of the innings as The Barbarians reached 153-7 off their 20 overs.

The rain continued between innings and bowling and fielding was proving to be incredibly difficult and all of the Barbarians bowlers struggled to grip and control the ball. The opening attack of Ian Ridley and Steve Kimsey started promisingly although the odd bad ball slipped in and was more often than not put away by the Bushey opening batsman.

In the third over Ridley picked up the first and only wicket of the innings when J.Sleeman was well caught in the gully by captain Wheeler.

The Barbarians spinners in the shape of Kibreeth Rameez and Phil Bush also struggled to grip the ball and due to this bad deliveries continued to be bowled and credit has to go to the Bushey pair of Chandon and C.Sleeman who continued to punish the bowling.

The envitable defeat came in the 17th over when Ridley was hit for six by Chandon to win the game for the Bushey. No defeats are without blame, however the conditions were so difficult to bowl and field in, getting a full game in was the real result.

Paul Jarvis was rightly named man of the match for his 66 not out picking up nine votes with opening batsman Richard Clarke picking up the other two. Next week sees the Barbarians play three consecutive games with away games at Denham on Tuesday and West Harrow on Wednesday. The Barbarians finish next week’s games with a home game v Ickenham.
